This structural steel project involved the fabrication and installation of a signature pedestrian bridge and elevated garden structure spanning over Old Spanish Trail in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. The project serves as a critical connection point within the South Campus, providing safe pedestrian access across a major roadway while incorporating architectural and landscape elements into a highly visible urban environment. PPB played a key role in delivering the structural steel framework that supports both the bridge span and the integrated garden components.
Scope of Work:
Pedestrian Bridge Structural Steel:
PPB fabricated and erected the primary structural steel system for the elevated pedestrian bridge crossing Old Spanish Trail. The bridge was designed to span a heavily trafficked roadway, requiring precise fabrication tolerances, engineered connection details, and coordinated erection sequencing to ensure structural integrity and public safety.
Long-Span Steel Installation:
The bridge structure required the installation of long-span steel members set over an active roadway within the Medical Center. This work demanded careful planning, crane coordination, and controlled lifting operations to safely set large structural components while minimizing disruption to vehicular and pedestrian traffic below.
Architectural & Structural Integration:
Given the high-profile nature of the project, the exposed structural steel was required to meet both structural performance and architectural standards. PPB coordinated closely with the design team to ensure alignment with aesthetic requirements, finish specifications, and interface points with concrete, glazing, and landscape features.
Cranes & Critical Lifts:
Multiple crane configurations were utilized to execute complex picks over Old Spanish Trail. Lift plans were carefully engineered to meet strict safety standards within a congested urban corridor. Coordination with city officials, traffic control teams, and the general contractor was essential to execute successful bridge set operations.
Challenges & Project Coordination:
Working over an active roadway in the Texas Medical Center presented significant logistical and safety challenges. Road closures, limited work windows, and strict permitting requirements required detailed preplanning and seamless coordination with local authorities.
In addition, the project required ongoing collaboration with multiple trades, including concrete, landscaping, and architectural teams, to ensure proper sequencing and interface alignment. Tight urban site constraints limited laydown space and crane positioning, demanding strategic material deliveries and efficient field execution.
Despite these challenges, PPB maintained a strong commitment to safety, precision, and schedule adherence—successfully delivering a structurally sound and visually impactful pedestrian bridge that enhances connectivity and functionality within the South Campus.
